2018 Highlights

In 2018, innovation and optimism coexisted with pragmatism and realism, and this without ever opposing each other. This is reflected in the significant events that occurred throughout the year.

Impact, the participatory financing platform for energy transition

Visuel La Manivelle

Created by SIG, it allows local companies to benefit from participatory financing to reduce their environmental footprint. The platform, which acts as an interface between project leaders and contributors, offers everyone the opportunity to participate in the energy transition while receiving a counterpart from the supported associations and companies. 6 projects were funded in 2018 via Impact.

Energy savings rewarded with the Negawatt Trophy

Trophée Négawatt

The Ambition Negawatt trophy was awarded this year to Privera for the energy savings achieved in its World Trade Center 1 building. A new award, the Giga Trophy, has also been created to support companies that are committed long term and have reduced their electricity consumption by more than one gigawatt hour. It was awarded to Dupont de Nemours (Switzerland), Firmenich, Geneva Airport, Interoute Managed Services Switzerland and Starling Hotel.

Assises de la transition énergétique

The European Energy Transition Conference was held for the first time in Geneva in January 2018, and brought together more than 4,500 delegates for 3 days of exchanges and sharing on energy transition. They have demonstrated their ability to bring together and federate public authorities, the economic and academic worlds for a privileged period of cooperation and co-construction around the implementation of a carbon-free society.

Solar

Promising results for the Satigny geothermal exploratory drilling programme

This first medium-depth exploratory drilling, performed as part of the GEothermie 2020 programme, confirms the forecasts established on the basis of geophysical tests performed from the surface. The water found 744 metres underground rises naturally to the surface at a temperature of 33 degrees with a flow rate of more than 50 litres/second. The Satigny borehole offers interesting prospects for covering part of the canton's heating needs with clean, renewable and local energy from the Geneva subsoil.

The continued development of GeniLac

This innovative system allows buildings to be heated and cooled with lake water. The current network now extends to Grand-Saconnex. At the same time, a second pumping station for the lake water is planned in Le Vengeron to accompany the extension of this vast network throughout the canton.

More renewable energy in the district heating network

SIG's district heating network is progressing in its decarbonisation. It has reached a non-fossil fuel rate of 56% this year.

Waste and wastewater

A new waste recovery plant
More modern and environmentally friendly, the new waste treatment and recovery plant, Cheneviers IV, will be resized to meet the needs of the canton of Geneva and will produce more energy with less waste. The major challenge of this project is to demolish the existing plant and install the new one on the same site, while maintaining operations during the work. The year 2018 was devoted to the demolition of the old installations, including the cutting of the 108-metre high historic chimney, and preparatory work for the construction of the new plant. A rotating bridge over the barge channel has therefore been built; in addition to its usefulness for operation, this bridge will provide pedestrian access to the banks of the Rhône to the Verbois dam. Cheneviers IV is expected to be completed by 2023.

The new Waste Water Treatment Plant of Villette
The reconstruction and extension work on the Villette WWTP has begun. The objective is to achieve, by 2023, a new WWTP that will treat wastewater from 80,000 inhabitants by meeting more stringent environmental standards. At the same time, a Franco-Swiss project to treat micropollutants at the WWTP in Villette is being implemented.

Operation of the sewerage networks in Geneva's municipalities
Since this year, SIG has been operating the sewerage networks of Geneva's 44 municipalities, representing 1,070 kilometres of networks. This great success crowns a service initiated in 2005 at the initiative of the State of Geneva. Only the City of Geneva continues to operate its network with its own teams.

Institutional
