Electricity

With its 4,712-km network, SIG supplies its customers with 100% renewable electricity, 32% of which is produced locally, mainly with the Verbois Dam.

In the event of an accidental outage, the interruption time is on average 5.4 minutes, and only 7.5 minutes for planned outages.

Meet an electrician

Natural gas

Some 33,900 customers connected to the natural gas network enjoy access to this energy source with its multiple applications, including heating, industrial processes, cooking, hot and cold water. The importation of this fossil fuel (the most environmentally friendly one) is complemented by the 18 GWh of biogas produced in Geneva.

In the event of an accidental outage, the interruption time is on average 4.95 minutes, and only 12.3 minutes for planned outages.

Energy efficiency

Our energy services are high performing and innovative; they ensure a maximum return for minimum consumption. The energy transition  involves us all, and that is why our services are intended for both businesses and households across Geneva, as well as public bodies.

Launched in 2007, our eco21 programme has enabled 205 GWh/year of electricity savings in the Canton of Geneva. By 2025, the goal is to reach 300 GWh, or the equivalent of the annual consumption of 100,000 households (for example: City of Geneva).

253'000 tonnes of CO₂ saved, i.e. 16 months of emissions from the Geneva car fleet.

Thermal

SIG provides an innovative heat and cooling network powered by the incineration of waste and wood, hydrothermal sources or the combustion of natural gas. In the coming years, these sources will be supplemented by new geothermal solutions.

Potable water

High-quality drinking water is produced, distributed and consumed in Geneva. SIG strives to conserve the quality of Lake Geneva and the groundwater tables, which are two vital resources.

114,532 tests were undertaken to monitor the drinking water quality in 2018.

Fibre optics

SIG operates a fibre optic network to make broadband services accessible to as many people as possible.

The SIG fibre optic network is 436-km long and serves 80% of the population of Geneva.

Waste recovery

Approximately 219,500 tonnes of waste are recycled every year at the Cheneviers plant. The energy released can supply 20,000 households with heating and hot water. 40% of the waste is transported by river, which means that the traffic equivalent of 13,000 trucks is avoided annually.

Wastewater treatment

Nearly 73 million m3 of wastewater is treated every year, or about 2,450 litres every second. 95% of the waste produced by wastewater treatment is recovered as energy and cement.
